About International Montessori House of Children

At International Montessori House of Children, we have a well-established legacy of providing an authentic Montessori education in a nurturing environment for young children. Our curriculum follows Dr. Maria Montessori’s time-tested pedagogy and we pride ourselves in upholding the high standards of a Montessori environment. Our teachers and staff continually further our education and work to maintain our commitment to providing the very best learning environment for the students in our care.

We see our families as an extension of our own. We celebrate an authentic spirit of service towards our children and their families as a part of our community. We believe in and practice school-family partnership and encourage active family engagement in our students’ education. Through progress reports, real-time messaging, and photos and videos via our secure app, our families can see how their children are flourishing in the IMHoC classrooms.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower children with active creative minds through Dr. Maria Montessori’s influential educational philosophy that emphasizes independence, freedom within limits, and discovery. We maintain prepared learning environments that will improve skills necessary for success by nurturing the development of the whole child – cognitive, social, emotional, and physical.

Our History

Our founder, Mrs. Iranganie Weerasuria, is an Association of Montessori Internationale (AMI) qualified directress who received her advanced diploma in 1958 from Dr. Mario Montessori, son of Dr. Maria Montessori and cofounder of the Association of Montessori International. Mrs. Weerasuria observed, taught, and developed Montessori in many parts of the world before catching the attention of then-president Lyndon Baines Johnson who facilitated her relocation to the Central Austin area to bring the Montessori method to the United States.

In 1971 Mrs. Weerasuria opened the first International Montessori House of Children. She was honored to have Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson as a friend and supporter and had Mrs. Johnson’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren as students of IMHoC. Currently, there are two locations of the International Montessori House of Children in northwest Austin.

Today, Mrs. Jennifer Weerasuria has assumed responsibility for Mrs. Weerasuria’s legacy by continuing to operate the two facilities of the International Montessori House of Children. She works closely with the leadership team consisting of the Director of Operations, Mrs. Ruha Matin, and assistant directors Mrs. Pinki and Mrs. Juju to continue the tradition of excellence.

We invite you to join our rich legacy of learning.
